Vacancies

The Netherlands Metabolomics Centre is a unique, multidisciplinary combination of pioneering experts dedicated to develop metabolomics technologies and to incorporate the emerging tools into biological/biomedical research through collaborations with academic groups, clinical centres and industry.

The mission of NMC is to take the lead in the creation of a world-class metabolomics knowledge infrastructure to improve personal health. The NMC has recently been founded by a subsidy from the Netherlands Genomics Initiative, and will have a budget of 50 M€ for the period from 2008-2012. The researchers will have a high degree of collaboration with each other, and will conduct their research at different places.

The NMC invites applications for the following positions:

Post-doctoral and PhD student positions in the following research areas:

  • Biostatistics
    • Biostatistics tools provide the link between quantified (and possibly identified) metabolites and biology. As such, it encompasses a broad area of tools.
    • vacancy for a Programmer data visualization

  • Quantitative Profiling:
    • For the acquisition of better quantitative data of hundreds of metabolites in biological samples, technology platforms are developed of validated and standardized protocols and methods for sampling, sample handling and quantitative analysis of relevant identified metabolites in volumes as small a few microlitres. Both in-depth profiling of metabolites as well as a more global or targeted profiling are considered. Some aims are of a broader nature and are integrated within several activities: high throughput is essential for applicability of metabolomics for the study of larger cohorts or for the cost-efficient application to industrial questions.

  • Metabolite Identification
    • For the identification of metabolites a semi-automated enrichment and fractionation strategy using LCxLC-SPE, coupled to identification using cryoNMR/MS, either in on- of off-line mode is envisioned.
Better strategies for structure elucidation will be developed for NMR and MSn data. For MSn data, algorithms will be developed to obtain structural information from the fragmentation patterns in the mass spectrometer. Metabolites will be identified starting with possible structures for the elemental composition using databases KEGG, etc), confirmation/elimination of candidates by NMR information, physical and (bio)chemical constraints, and other additional information.

      Examples of envisioned projects are:
  • Fractionation and enrichment strategies for LC-NMR/FTMSn
  • Algorithm- and rule-based identification to identify structures by MSn
  • Strategies for de-novo identification using NMR/MSn and physical/(bio)chemical constraints
  • De-novo identification of metabolites with GC-EI-MSn
  • Composition of (sub)metabolomes and specific metabolomes
  • Biomarkers in Endometriosis
  • Metabolomics in Nutrition & Health
    • Within the NMC Unilever, DSM and the NutriGenomics Consortium (NGC) collaborate to apply novel metabolomics approaches to resolve current bottlenecks in nutrition and health research

For the DCL laboratory we are looking for an LC-MS RESEARCH ANALIST Metabolomics, details can be found here.

The developed tools and methods will be applied and further optimized to answer challenging biological questions together with other researchers at Genomics Centres or the industry.

If you are interested, you are invited to submit your CV and a letter of motivation to info@metabolomicscentre.nl. Your CV will be accessible for the different consortium partners; in case of interest, you will be contacted.
